Binali Yıldırım, the Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey said that during the cyber-attacks to the domain names with “.tr” as the suffix, the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) and The Presidency of Telecommunication and Communication (PTC) responded immediately. The Minister expressed that “This attack continued till 17th of December. A 2-hourslowdown and service disruption took place”

Mr. Yıldırım reminded the AA reporter that since 14th of December, the cyber-attacks to the internet sites registered under the “.tr”top-level domain have increased. He told that ICTA and PTC intervened immediately just after the start of the attack. He mentioned that on some websites there were some misleading news such as “this intervention was done on METU’s request.”, he expressed that “But the fact is absolutely different. Who first noticed the attack were the affiliated and related agencies of our Ministry. As soon as they noticed, they responded. Our National CSIRT (Computer Security Incident Response Team) intervened the incidence. We already have our team and relevant legislations regarding cyber security infrastructure.”

The Minister Yıldırım emphasized that these attacks did not affect all internet users, but they targeted the “.tr” domain name servers operated by METU. The Minister added that “Currently the “.tr” top-level domain name is administered by METU, but it must be transferred to ICTA according the new law of ICTA.”
