What is 4.5G?

IMT-Advanced, known in the public as 4.5G, is the general name for the latest mobile communication technology used worldwide. This technology is a mobile communication technology that provides mobile internet at higher speeds, lower latency, and high capacity.

Fourth Generation (4G) is the general term given to mobile communication systems developed to provide high-speed broadband services over mobile phones and possessing a fully IP-based network structure. This system, standardized by ITU under its name to exceed the high speed limits partially reached with 3G in mobile communication networks and to meet the excessively increasing mobile broadband requirements, includes LTE/LTE-A technology developed by 3GPP and mobile WiMAX 2.0 (802.16m) technology developed by IEEE among 4G technologies.

What has been provided with the 4.5G authorization?

With the 4.5G authorization, flexibility has been provided to operators in the use of technology. Through this authorization, operators have gained the opportunity to offer new technologies, including 5G, to our citizens simultaneously with the world. The regulations introduced aim to enable operators to use emerging technologies and especially next-generation new technologies like 5G without the need for any permissions, and to conduct their network planning in a more flexible manner.

For the first time with the 4.5G authorization, the coverage obligations of 4.5G and 3G have been allowed to be evaluated together. This has prevented redundant investments by operators under 3G while also encouraging the widespread adoption and use of newer technologies.

In addition, obligations have been imposed to share active radio access networks in divided highways, motorways, tunnel coverages, conventional railway lines, high-speed and very high-speed railway lines, and in settlements with a population of less than 10,000. In other words, in these areas, three operators will be able to serve their subscribers simultaneously through a single base station. This is expected to achieve significant resource savings.

Another important aspect, as an indicator of the emphasis placed on domestic products and production, is that for the first time with the 4.5G authorization, obligations have been imposed on operators regarding the use of domestic products in network investments. This is aimed at providing much greater incentives to domestically producing companies for developing domestic products in the electronic communications sector and fostering the development of a domestic product ecosystem.
