4.5G and Devices

Does connecting to the 4.5G network drain our mobile phones' batteries faster?

Our mobile phones connect to 2G/3G/4.5G networks automatically or manually depending on the selection made from the "settings" menu and switch between these networks. For example, in a mobile phone set for automatic switching between the said networks and with data connection also enabled, the existing network infrastructure (in order: 4.5G, 3G, and 2G) that provides the fastest data connection option at the location where the mobile phone is used (which we are subscribers to) is utilized, and our phone automatically switches between these networks in the coverage area. We can change our data connection speed by manually limiting the network types we select. For example, if data connection is active on a phone manually set to connect only to the 2G network, our phone will connect to the internet at speeds permitted by "EDGE" technology.

The charging durations of our mobile phones can vary depending on various factors such as the coverage quality of the network we are connected to (2G/3G/4.5G), whether we are mobile or stationary, call durations, durations of active cellular data connections, applications requiring the screen to remain on continuously (e.g., navigation and games), active applications running continuously in the background, and types of wireless connections actively used (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi access, internet sharing - Wi-Fi hotspot). Looking solely from the perspective of the type of mobile network connected to (2G/3G/4.5G), as the network coverage quality improves, the phones will operate at lower transmission powers, allowing their batteries to last longer. For example, with the same brand and model phone, a device set to automatically switch between network types (2G/3G/4.5G) and use data connections will have its battery drain faster than another phone manually set to connect only to the 2G network. On the other hand, it cannot be said that phones set for automatic switching between network types will have even shorter battery life when connecting to new 4.5G networks. The most critical point here is to turn off the data connection on our phones when active data connection is not needed. Thus, even if our phones are programmed for automatic switching between network types, they will not establish an active data connection, resulting in longer battery life.

What will appear on my phone screen while using the 4.5G service?

The way the type of connected mobile network is displayed on our cell phone's screen may vary depending on the manufacturers' preferences. Some manufacturers display the connected network type on the cell phone screen based on the base technology, even though it is a higher version, while others display it based on the current technology built upon the base technology. In our country, the LTE-A (LTE-Advanced) technology, referred to as 4.5G, is a mobile communication technology based on LTE. Therefore, when a cell phone supporting 4.5G (LTE-A) technology connects to these networks, its screen may show LTE or 4G, or LTE-A or 4.5G, depending on the manufacturer's preference. Since our cell phone supports 4.5G technology, there will be no difference in our connection speed in either case; the cell phone will support the highest possible connection speed based on the coverage quality of the operator we are subscribed to in our location. Some manufacturers have released software updates to display this on the screens of 4.5G phones currently used by consumers and those they will newly supply to the market, while other manufacturers are preparing such updates. You can learn whether your cell phone supports 4.5G technology and the maximum speed it supports according to its category from the user manual and the manufacturer's website.
