Ethiopia hosted the 17th United Nations Internet Governance Forum this year. Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan, Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, who participated in the forum on behalf of our country with a delegation, emphasized the importance of collaborations that countries will undertake in this field.
The “17th United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF 2022)”, which takes the pulse of the internet sector worldwide, brought together representatives of national and international organizations.
At the meeting held in the capital Addis Ababa, Deputy Minister Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan met with representatives of other countries and highlighted the importance of consultations for countries. Speaking about Turkey's works and achievements in the field of information and technology, Sayan said, “Under the leadership of our President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, we have embarked on a path with the National Technology Initiative. With the Turkey Century, our country is much more confident in itself. We have now become an actor that shapes information and technology. These meetings are very important for demonstrating Turkey's power in the international arena. Here, we both talk about our own works and gain comprehensive information about the activities carried out by other countries. In particular, the bilateral consultations we hold with country representatives provide important gains to both sides.”
Ömer Abdullah Karagözoğlu, President of the Information Technologies and Communication Authority, also expressed his satisfaction over the introduction of Turkey's works on internet governance and regulation in the international arena.
At the 17th Internet Governance Forum, one of the largest international meetings held in Ethiopia's capital in recent years, discussions were held not only on the risks and challenges of the internet but also on concrete steps to harness the power of the internet. The forum addressed topics such as the misuse of the internet, misinformation, disinformation, cybercrimes, the benefits offered by the internet, telemedicine, digital banking, and access to e-learning.
In the 17th United Nations Internet Governance Forum, which began on November 28 and will conclude on December 2, Information Technologies and Communication Authority Board Members Dr. Ahmet Kılıç, Hüsnü Kılıç, and Internet Department Head Dr. Abdulkerim Gün accompanied Deputy Minister Sayan and Karagözoğlu. Deputy Minister Sayan and his delegation also visited the Ethiopia Museum of Art and Science.
The outcomes of the forum will be used for the “Global Digital Compact” at the UN Future Summit to be held in 2024.
