Minister Bilgin spoke at the 4.5G IMT-Advanced Authorization Ceremony organized by BTK. The main highlights of Minister Bilgin's speech are as follows:
According to the research conducted, the size of the internet economy in G-20 countries, which was 2.3 trillion dollars in 2010, is expected to nearly double to 4.2 trillion dollars in 2016, reaching 5.3% of the total gross domestic product. In this context, another key point emphasized is that while a slowdown is anticipated in the economic growth rates of G-20 countries in the coming years, the internet economy will surpass the overall economic growth rate, increasing by 8%.
In the past 60 years, we have witnessed a significant productivity increase in industry due to information technologies and applications. Now, information and communication technologies are on the verge of providing a similar productivity boost in the service sector. Artificial intelligence applications have reached our mobile phones. Undoubtedly, these applications will become increasingly effective in the coming years. A world where machines are interconnected via the Internet of Things and advanced artificial intelligence applications guide our daily lives is not far away.
On the other hand, mobile communication, which has become indispensable in our era, is gaining a new dimension today with the concept of mobile broadband. In other words, simply being mobile is no longer enough; accessing fast internet services over mobile networks has become an essential need. The number of mobile phone subscribers, which was 14.7 million in 2000, has exceeded 73 million as of September this year. The broadband internet subscriber count, which was 20 thousand in 2003, has approached 47 million. This rapid growth has been driven primarily by the mobile broadband internet service introduced since 2009, and as of today, mobile broadband subscribers have surpassed 37.5 million.
Therefore, with today's authorization, we are embarking on a new era in the technology sector in our country.
In our country, the developments and transformations achieved in information technologies and communication over the last 13 years are gaining a new dimension in mobile communication.
