At the ODTÜ Culture and Congress Center, the .tr Network Information System TRABİS was introduced during the organized program.
In his opening speech at the program, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu stated that as of the end of June, Turkey ranks among the top 20 countries worldwide and the top 5 in Europe in terms of total number of internet users.
Noting that fundamental changes have been made in domain name allocation processes as a result of legislative studies, Karaismailoğlu said, “First and foremost, domain name management and domain name sales services have been separated from each other to create a competitive and free market.” Karaismailoğlu also drew attention to the separation of the "Registration Organizations," which enable transactions for customers regarding domain names, and "TRABİS," the registration authority managing the ".tr" domain name system.
Minister Karaismailoğlu: Transactions Related to Domain Names Have Been Placed on a More Secure and Faster Foundation
Stating that the Ministry has conducted a coordinated and efficient process with the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) and ODTÜ in the works carried out for TRABİS, Karaismailoğlu said, “With this innovation, it can already be foreseen that the number of ".tr" extension domain names will increase significantly.”
Emphasizing that with TRABİS, the allocation of ".tr" extension domain names will basically be done online and without documents as much as possible, Karaismailoğlu stated, “Previously, there were issues such as the strict rules for allocating '.tr' extension domain names, high domain name fees, and excessive bureaucratic procedures. Thousands of people were buying 'com' extensions instead of 'com.tr,' and millions of dollars were going to private companies abroad. This problem has been eliminated with TRABİS. Now, demand for '.tr' extension domain names will increase.”
Deputy Minister Sayan: Internet Domain Names Have Gained Separate Importance
Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan also spoke at the launch ceremony of the .tr Network Information System TRABİS.
Deputy Minister Sayan said, “In today's globalizing world, the internet is the easiest, fastest, and most cost-effective way to communicate, sell services and products, conduct banking transactions, and perform countless other tasks that make our lives easier.” Sayan stated, “Internet domain names have also gained separate importance. Today, internet domain names are one of the most important tools for introducing institutions/organizations and businesses, just like a brand, trade name, or business name, and distinguishing them from others.”
Deputy Minister Sayan: First Come, First Served Without Documents
Noting that with the regulation prepared by BTK regarding internet domain names, fundamental changes have been made in the domain name allocation methods that have been carried out by ODTÜ since 1990, Sayan stated, “Our Ministry has prepared the Internet Domain Names Regulation, and with the Regulation, the duty and authority to carry out the processes regarding the allocation of “.tr” extension domain names have been given to BTK.”
Sayan provided the information that “Another innovation brought by the regulations is that the allocation of “com.tr”, “org.tr”, and “net.tr” extension domain names, which were previously allocated with documents, has started on a first-come, first-served basis without documents, and with this method, domain name allocation processes have been facilitated.”
Deputy Minister Sayan: Measures Are Being Taken Against Fraud Incidents
Stating that another innovation brought by TRABİS is the lists of “restricted allocation domain names” and “limited allocation domain names” created to prevent the misuse of domain names, Sayan concluded his speech by saying, “In addition, measures are being taken against fraud incidents called phishing, which can be carried out through domain names, with the domestic and national AI-based application called AZAD, developed entirely with internal resources by USOM.”
