Information and Communication Technologies Authority President Ömer Abdullah Karagözoğlu attended the Data Center Ankara event.
Participating online in the event, which is being held for the 5th time this year, President Karagözoğlu met with data experts. Karagözoğlu spoke at the event about topics such as data analytics, big data, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and secure communication networks.
Stating that the internet is becoming an increasingly integral part of our lives day by day, Karagözoğlu shared the following information: “Today, approximately 5 billion people around the world use the internet. In our country, the total number of broadband internet subscribers exceeded 88 million by the end of 2021, marking a 7% increase from the previous year. With almost everything becoming connectable to the internet, it is estimated that the number of internet-connected devices worldwide will exceed eight billion by 2030. As of the end of 2021 in our country, the number of M2M subscribers has approached 7.4 million.”
Expressing that data has reached enormous dimensions today, Karagözoğlu said, “This growth is increasing every moment, especially with new forms of data coming from social networks and mobile devices. The resulting big data forms one of the most powerful IT resources of our time. Collecting and processing this resource also gives rise to the need for large data centers.”
President Karagözoğlu: Massive Investments Are Being Made in Data Center Infrastructures Worldwide
Noting that data centers are shaped by changing supply, demand, and regulations, Karagözoğlu said, “As a result of changing global trends, data centers built ten years ago are as different from those built this year as tomorrow's data centers will be from today's.”
Emphasizing that massive investments are being made in data center infrastructures worldwide, President Karagözoğlu expressed his wish: “Every advantage, incentive, and support we provide in the field of data centers will contribute to multinational companies operating in this area investing in our country, while also enabling our country's young and dynamic workforce to be directed towards this field. At the same time, it will create opportunities for our domestic companies in services/supply related to data centers. I believe that as new data centers are built in our country, together with our qualified workforce, our country's strong position in the global arena will advance even further.”
Karagözoğlu also drew attention to the topic of big data and environmental cleanliness: “As you know, data centers account for more than 2% of global energy consumption. This also means 2% of the world's total carbon emissions. Cabinet densities in data centers are increasing day by day. While we used to talk about 7 kilowatts in the past, today we are talking about 10-15 kilowatts. Research shows that in the future, these values are likely to be 20 and above. New generation designs, the development and use of more efficient infrastructure equipment are of great importance for protecting our world.”
