BTK President Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan made evaluations regarding the 4th Quarter Market Data Report covering the months of October, November, and December 2016 and also including figures for the entire year of 2016.
Emphasizing that the electronic communications sector continued to grow and develop in 2016 despite the restructuring of institutions following the treacherous attack on July 15, Sayan stated, “The number of subscribers utilizing 4.5G services, which began on April 1, 2016, is increasing rapidly. By the end of 2016, 51.7 million citizens switched to 4.5G subscriptions. The number of subscribers with 4.5G-compatible devices and SIM cards who are actively using 4.5G services reached 19.2 million by year-end, marking an increase of 2.8 million from the previous period. The total mobile subscriber count exceeded 75 million. Thus, mobile penetration surpassed 94%. The machine-to-machine (M2M) subscriber count also reached 4 million for the first time.”
“BROADBAND INTERNET SUBSCRIBER COUNT REACHES 62.2 MILLION”
Noting that both fixed and mobile broadband are rapidly spreading when looking at broadband internet data, Sayan said, “By the end of 2016, the total broadband internet subscriber count reached 62.2 million, with 10.5 million fixed subscribers and 51.7 million mobile subscribers, reflecting a 28.1% increase from the previous year. The largest share of this increase came from Mobile Internet on Phones, which grew by approximately 34.8%, followed by Fiber to the Home (FTTH) at about 18.1%.”
“FIBER LENGTH REACHES 290,974 KM”
Reminding that mobile data usage showed a significant increase in 2016 compared to the previous year due to the rapid spread of 4.5G, Sayan stated, “Monthly average mobile usage, which was 1.3 Gbyte in 2015, increased by more than 50% in 2016 to approximately 1.98 Gbyte per month. The average for the last quarter was 2.2 Gbyte. The average usage for 4.5G subscribers with compatible SIM cards and devices reached 5.4 Gbyte. Fixed broadband usage also exceeded an average of 66.5 Gbyte per month with a 15% increase. Additionally, progress was made in fiber infrastructure investments in 2016. Fiber length, which was 268,119 km at the end of the previous year, reached 290,974 km in the fourth quarter of 2016, achieving nearly 9% growth.”
BTK President Sayan finally stated that he hopes fixed and mobile infrastructure investments in our country will continue in 2017 and wished that the 2016 Fourth Quarter Market Data Report would be beneficial to everyone.
