Message from Dr. Tayfun ACARER for 25 April International Girl’s in ICT Day
Message from Dr. Tayfun ACARER, Chairman of the Board and President of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority, for 25 April International Girl’s in ICT Day
Pursuant to the Resolution 70 adopted by the Plenipotentiary Conference 2010 of International Telecommunication Union, fourth Thursday of April in each year is decided as “International Girls’ in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Day”. This year 25 April is celebrated as the International Girls’ in ICT Day. To create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider their careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies, International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated by General Secretariat of ITU with various activities and also in the Member States, many events are organized for girls and young women to attract their interests and attentions to ICT.
Having considerable amount of young population, for our country, to empower and encourage girls and young women to consider their careers in ICT and to increase women recruitment, it is important that similar organisations and activities be conducted by the relevant institutions and companies operating in this field.
According to the statistics of 2012 by the Turkish Statistical Institute, labor force participation rate among women is 29,5% and proportion of employed women in the population is 26,3 % . In the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA), women employment rate is 27 % and women are at very important points in their careers either in management or expert level. When we look at the sector side, by the end of 2012, in the operators licensed by ICTA, total number of employment is 36.865 in which 8.666 of them are women, rating to 23,5 %. Apart from this, operators show their sensitivity on this issue by conducting various projects towards the increase in women employment and improvement of education of girls. Therefore, I believe that participation of women to labor force will increase more rapidly with those kinds of projects and activities in the field of ICT in the coming years.
With these thoughts, I would like to express my congratulations for 25 April International Girl’s in ICT Day.
